Even worse was that she was left alone with Alexis.

The self-proclaimed Nightwalker queen.

Now, the Dayborns—the born vampires—had a royal family. It wasn’t common knowledge; Tabby only learned about the Ryhills because of her uncle and all the intel he collected as the head of the Society of Slayers. They, at least, have a true queen.

Nightwalkers, on the other hand…

The turned vampires were usually the more solitary race of bloodsuckers. They usually lived alone, hunted alone, existed alone… until the loneliness drove them mad and turned them rogue.

After that, they were the slayers’ problem.

Then along came Julian Koenig. He had styled himself as a Nightwalker king. Allying with the dark witch Priscilla, he created a gang of rogue man-eaters, crowning himself their leader while giving them free rein to feed. Suddenly, the solitary race was becoming more of a threat as the killer vamps banded together.

That’s how Adam got involved in Para business in the first place, she learned. When he was still a cop—still human—he was assigned to a task force designed to track down the rogue bloodsuckers leaving drained bodies all over Grayson. Because it was obviously a Para killer, they partnered him with another one: Colton Wolfe, the Beta of the Eastern Pack.

Julian wanted to take Colton’s fated mate, the empathic with Shea, as his own betrothed. With the proper amount of blood exchanges and a claiming bit, he could have, though it was no surprise to the Society of Slayers that Colton ripped off Julian’s head before the Society got close enough to eradicate the Nightwalker nest.

Julian’s second-in-command, Rafe Silverson, took over next. Like Julian, he thought he would be the Nightwalker king—until Adam got his revenge for Rafe turning him by taking his head.

And now here was Alexis. The latest queen, eager to claim a mate that was never meant for her, and who had finally tip-toed over the line between Nightwalker and rogue.

Adam’s weapon glowed red. That meant only one thing.

Tabby shifted her hand to the front of her hip, reassured by the familiar bulge of Venice resting right where she left her.

Before she could draw her weapon, though, Alexis shifted to her right. Tabby immediately reacted, guarding her flank.

She realized a split second too late that she made a mistake. Being face to face with Alexis might’ve been a figurative trap, but the snare that looped around her ankle, flipping her over as she launched about four feet into the air… yeah. That one was a literal trip.

In close to a decade of hunting with only one of her prized dogs as a partner, this was the first time her enemy had gotten the literal jump on her. A freaking snare trap? Really? She should almost tilt her throat and offer to allow Alexis to drain her just so she never had to admit to Boone that she could be caught ass over head, swinging from a rope lashed tightly around her ankle.

No wonder Alexis didn’t seem bothered to be left alone with just Tabby.
